Marostica is a beautiful medieval town nestled in the hills, between Astico and Brenta River. Its fortified walls, which open from the Upper Castle to the Lower Castle, surround the entire historical center, preserving the charm and the magic of its famous Chess Square. Here in 1454 Rinaldo D’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara Lionora both fell in love with the Marostica’s governor daughter , Lionora. They disputed the famous chess match to decide who would get the hand of the princess. Still today in this square that same match is played. Every two years, 500 people in medieval costumes representing the “pieces” of a living chessboard, play a game of chess match, while the beautiful Lionora and her sister Oldrada watch from the balcony of the Castle.
The pleasant surrounding hills are cultivated vineyards, olive and cherry trees.
The famous Cherry of Marostica is a mark, appreciated for its sweetness and its bright scarlet colour, it is a Protected Mark of Geographical Identification.
Around Marostica there is a wide area rich in history and culture. Bassano, Vicenza, Treviso, Padua and Venice are the most interesting cities to visit. But you can also enjoy nature and the rural landscape of the hills of Marostica, walking and biking local routes, or tasting typical products . For the lovers of natural landscapes, Garda Lake and the Alps can be reached by car in a short time . For those who love art and craftsmanship, in Possagno you can visit the Gipsoteca of Canova ant the city of Nove, famous for its handmade pottery.
